Ford Farms raises Highland Cattle on the natural pastureland
that comprises the Island.
We have selected the Highland breed for a variety of reasons,
including their natural resistance to disease and ability
to forage; their inherent gentleness and ease of birthing;
and the production of meat that is lean and low in cholesterol,
yet rich in marbling and flavor.
This results from the long hair and thick skin that maintains
their body heat without developing a layer of fat typical
in most cattle breeds. The thick coat also protects them
from insects and weather, so that a healthy herd can thrive
without artificial hormones or steroids.
We raise our cattle free range on natural pasture and
alfalfa hay, and use only natural mineral supplements.
We feed out our steers for a maximum of 60 days on a blend
of grains mixed with molasses.
We use no steroids, growth hormones, digestive stimulators
or chemicals to produce our meat, and by using only registered
purebred breeding stock, we have been able to bring choice
steers to our USDA approved processor.
